Art and Culture Show with Sharinda Welton and guest Jason LeVasseur (ep14)
Guest presenter, Jason LeVasseur presented a customized presentation to the UF campus “Making the ‘Connect’ Work” that focused on the importance and ease of professional and social networking.
LeVasseur is a leadership speaker, workshop facilitator, summer camp program director, award-winning music performer, the creator and creative director of The Rock Star Project® – a collection of original programs that combine Jason’s knowledge in both teaching and music in his unique leadership framework.
Jason graduated with a double major in education and philosophy from Wake Forest University, with plans to become a high school English teacher, a three season athletic coach and residential summer camp counselor. However, while student teaching in the spring of his senior year he began recording his first music CD with his campus rock band. Upon the album’s release his band gained instant regional recognition. 25 years, 13 CDs, and 18 performance awards later – Jason is still “taking off a year”. However, this successful touring life did not keep Jason from his teaching. He has continued his work in leadership education over the years as a keynote speaker, workshop facilitator, summer camp counselor, wilderness guide, and is the current Program Director for the same residential summer camp he attended as a camper.
During the academic year Jason travels and works with student leaders across the country, helping them realize their influential role on campus and in their community. His team-building expertise and ability to captivate a crowd guide all of his keynotes and workshops, skillfully teaching students proven tools to strengthen their own clubs and organizations. His diverse experience in working with over 2,500 campuses has given Jason a broad perspective on what is important for student leaders to succeed in school
Ohio Poet Laureate Dave Lucas 2019 at the University of Findlay
Ohio Poet Laureate Dave Lucas to visit University of Findlay.
Ohio’s current poet laureate, Dave Lucas, insists that all of us already love poetry, even if we think we don’t.
“If you know by heart the lyrics to your favorite song, you already love one kind of poetry,” he writes. “You love another when you laugh at a joke or groan over a bad pun. The jargon of your profession and the slang you speak with friends are poetry.”
After he speaks, Lucas will sell and autograph some of his works. He also plans to visit a University of Findlay poetry class taught by Conor Bracken, assistant professor of English, who is helping to bring Lucas to the community via UF’s College of Liberal Arts and the UF Convocations Committee.
Lucas is a Cleveland, Ohio native who earned his Bachelor of Arts in English from John Carroll University, a Master of Fine Arts in creative writing from the University of Virginia, and a Master of Arts and Ph.D. in English language and literature from the University of Michigan.
His work, “Weather,” was awarded the 2012 Ohioana Book Award in Poetry, and his poems are anthologized in The Bedford Introduction to Literature and Best New Poets of 2005, among other publications.
As the state’s poet laureate, Lucas is responsible for fostering the art of poetry, encouraging literacy and learning, addressing central issues relating to the humanities and heritage, and encouraging the reading and writing of poetry across Ohio.
Art and Culture Show with Sharinda Welton talks about UF’s 2019 International Night
This family-friendly intercultural celebration with a festival atmosphere features student groups from around the globe who share their culture and country with the campus and community. Delicious traditional food, cultural information, artifacts, activities, crafts, music, dancing, and entertainment are showcased.
This free and open to the public celebration is one of the most popular and anticipated annual campus offerings. Over the past 50 years, thousands of attendees have enjoyed the opportunity to partake in the cuisine from countries ranging from Austria to Zambia, observed traditional song and dance performances and taken part in a variety of fun, educational activities.
“International Night is like a door for diversification. For a small community like Findlay, UF’s cultural and diversity events are a stage to introduce our home and cultures to the outside world while going to school, for which I am grateful. I enjoy showing my culture and learning something new about a different culture simultaneously. It is an incredible experience. Also, I need to thank you all from the Buford Center for letting us feel like home even when miles away from home.” – Manasa Akkineni
Join us on Friday, March 29, 2019, from 5:30 – 8:00 pm as we celebrate the 50th year for this special event.
International Night is hosted by UF’s Buford Center for Diversity and Service. For more information, contact Jennifer Butler at butler@findlay.edu or at 419-434-5855.
