Miles of Bravery: A Juneteenth Celebration 2019
Lecture: Underground Railroad Expert Cathy Nelson. Cathy Nelson is a retired Columbus City Schools teacher and Founder of the Friends of Freedom Society, delivered a lecture on the history of the Underground Railroad in Ohio. Ms. Nelson has testified to Congress on behalf of the Underground Railroad Network to Freedom Act of 1997, and she and her extensive research have won numerous awards and widespread recognition.
June 19, is a day to recognize the freedom of the last enslaved people in America. It was on this day in 1865 that the news of the Emancipation Proclamation, signed in 1863 by Abraham Lincoln, reached the western-most part of the United States making all people in America free.
In celebration of Juneteenth, several local organizations will be hosting artwork from Mazza Museum’s “Miles of Bravery: The Underground Railroad through Picture Books” exhibit. Each location will have art and books from the collection as well as family-friendly activities.

Matt Shapiro, spirited, charismatic speaker and consultant
Matthew Shapiro is a spirited, charismatic speaker and consultant, born with cerebral palsy. He graduated in from Virginia Common Wealth University with a BA in Interdisciplinary Studies, BA in Sociology and a minor in Psychology in 2013.
Matthew is the founder and CEO of 6 Wheels Consulting. He created and regularly hosts 6 Wheels Consulting Disability Podcasts.
When speaking, Matthew entertains and enlightens his audiences on how they can “become their own wrecking ball,” breaking free of their comfort zones and exceed their personal goals.
Matthew’s wheelchair was his safety net and leaving it caused him tremendous trepidation. He was not fully experiencing life. Through the persuasion a friend, he attended an event that changed his life FOREVER! He overcame his fears, placing his life in the hands of others. Now, he shares his secrets and strategies, allowing audiences to incorporate his messages into their own lives, breaking free from whatever “chair” is holding them back! His messages have won him the accolades of many. He was named Style Weekly’s Top 40 Under 40, profiled in Virginia Business Magazine and served the Obama Administration in the Office of Public Engagement and Intergovernmental Affairs.

The Arts and Culture Show with Sharinda Welton: The ASIA Project
Since 2009, The Asia Project has toured over 600 colleges with an acoustic music poetry act that has amazed audiences all over the country. On the microphone is Asia Samson: writer, poet and part-time ninja. He has been seen on HBO Def Poetry Jam and has shared the stage with such artists as Janelle Monae, Jill Scott, DMX, Mos Def, Dead Prez and KRS-One. Accompanying him on the guitar is his brother-in-law Jollan who uses music to create an atmosphere that brings poetry to emotional levels you would never expect.
