Email: Dolejsj@findlay.edu

As we come to a close on the school year, I have one last pick of the week for WLFC. To wrap the year up, the pick this week is “It’s Called: Freefall” by Rainbow Kitten Surprise. Rainbow Kitten Surprise is an alternative indie rock band from Boone, NC. They formed in 2013 when the founding members began making music together at Appalachian State University.
The song “It’s Called: Freefall” has very poetic lyrics that tug on the heartstrings of listeners. The song starts very melodic and slow then evolves into something more upbeat and rap based. The rhythm to the song is captivating and will have listeners playing it over and over all day. The song is very appealing to listeners of all types of music.
If you enjoy artists such as Coast Modern, Hippo Campus, or Netherfriends, I highly recommend giving Rainbow Kitten Surprise a listen. They will have you wrapped in their music all day and their soundtrack will make a great summer album to listen to anytime.

This is the first time Franz Ferdinand has released a full album in nearly five years.
The style of the song “Always Ascending” is nothing new to Franz Ferdinand. This song has all the classical styles of the indie rock group; it is punk-funk and classic in nature. While sticking to a classic sound, it captures several futuristic vibes.

Findlay’s Indie now Findlay’s finalist

The year is 1973, and WLFC is only a little more than just a small room in the Frank J. Egner Center for the Performing Arts.

“[We] could barely get the signal everywhere in Findlay,” stated Douglas Jenkins, WLFC station advisor.

Flash forward to 2018, and Findlay’s Indie has been able to upgrade its power to reach five counties. Since its beginning, the radio station has undergone a lot of changes, like moving from Egnar to the Village, changing its’ logo, and developing a website.

Jenkins, who took over the station in 2014, explains the expansion of WLFC since its beginning nearly 50 years ago.

“Last March, we took out a little used talk studio and transformed it into the “WLFC Lounge” which is a place DJs can hang out, and also where we can host music performances,” said Jenkins. “So far we’ve had five or six bands come in. We’re shooting for one a month this year.”

These improvements are likely a major contributor to the three awards that WLFC is nominated for and considered finalists for. These awards include “Best Live Music Broadcast,” “Best Website,” and “Best Logo.”

WLFC Student DJ and University of Findlay Junior Chris Corso voices his excitement about the station’s nominations and all the hard work that goes into it.

“I think it’s a testament to how much work, effort, and love is put into the station,” said Corso. We all love working at the station and it’s just another thing to be proud about when we get to say that we work for WLFC.”

Jenkins states he can’t recall 88.3 ever being a finalist for these awards before. He does rememebr, however, that the live broadcast nominated for the first award is from WLFC’s memorable show, “The I-75 Stopover,” which featured a live performance by Indie Artist Carsie Blanton.

The Intercollegiate Broadcasting System will announce the recipients of the three awards on Saturday, March 3rd.

WLFC’s top picks

January 19, 2018 by

WLFC does not play the typical music you hear on the radio. Much of the Northwest Ohio radio waves are filled with country, Christian, and pop music. At WLFC, we play independent label music. These aren’t the songs you often hear on the radio. In order to pick the top songs circulating, our DJs vote on songs.

The top songs played at the station are called Power Current. This is a group of 15 songs voted on by the WLFC staff as the top songs currently at the station. By playing Power Current songs, listeners get a sense of the musical tastes of our staff, as well as a sense of the most popular songs in the Indie industry.

We also have a group of songs called Currents. These are the top 20 songs in our library according to college radio music charts that missed the Power Current list. Our goal is to keep the station as up-to-date and popular as possible.

Whether you are a new listener or a seasoned listener, you will not be disappointed by the song selection at WLFC.

Power Current Songs:
1. Foster The People-Doing It For the Money
2. Gorillaz-Andromeda
3. Barns Courtney-Kicks
4. Alt-J-In Cold Blood
5. Just Shy Of-Lazee Boy
6. The War On Drugs-Holding On
7. Beach Fossils-Tangerine
8. Twin Peaks-Come For Me
9. Flaming Groovies-I’d Rather Spend My Time With You
10. Iron & Wine-Call It Dreaming
11. Charlie Parr-Another Dog
12. Arcade Fire-I Give You Power

14. High Waisted-Firebomb
15. Acid Tongue-If I Really Loved Her
